SENIOR LEADERS PILOT PROGRAM

We’re excited to launch ElderUp’s- Senior Leaders for Social Engagement – an ambitious pilot uniting eight Kalamazoo County senior communities with Bronson Health to empower residents through peer-led activities and meaningful wellness outcomes.

Why this matters (our learning)
Even after removing common barriers like finances and transportation, a single, systemic challenge remains, changing deeply ingrained attitudes toward “work” and leisure. Many in this generation were raised with little emphasis on play, time off, or hobbies.
When retirement arrives, family networks can shift or fade, leaving seniors with smaller social circles. Our Senior Leadership program- rooted in trust, time, and peer connection-aims to bridge that gap by empowering elders to design and lead activities that feel safe, familiar, and genuinely engaging.
By training resident leaders within the communities we serve, we cultivate trusted peers who can invite participation, build confidence, and expand social networks from within.

Impactful Context
Social engagement can reduce dementia risk by up to 30% and may lower the need for hospitalization and ongoing care by as much as 60%.
Yet loneliness remains a serious issue in low-income communities, with 42% reporting severe isolation and depression. ElderUp directly addresses this through relatable leadership and accessible, peer-led programming.

What’s happening
A vibrant lineup of activities: fitness, arts, monthly social events, and wellness education
Resident leadership: 5 trained leaders at each community to design, implement, and expand engaging programming
Measured impact: Bronson Health will assess how social connection improves health and quality of life
